The exploitation of oil by Shell in Nigeria is a disaster for the environment and people in the Niger Delta. Subsistence farming and fishing are the mainstay of the people. inhabited by more than 3,000 long-settled communities, the present population figure of the Niger Delta is estimated to be 7 million. Of the people residing in the Niger Delta region, 75 per cent rely on natural endowments for a living. But air, water, soil and forest resources have been devastated by the exploitation of oil and gas resources. Particular problems result from gas flares and oil spills. Victims of Shell’s oil pollution from the Nigerian villages of Oruma, Goi and Ikot Ada Udo, in conjunction with Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie), have started a lawsuit against Shell Nigeria and Shell’s parent company in the Netherlands. Three cases have been brought before the court. This is the first time in history that a Dutch corporation has been called to account in a Dutch court for damage done abroad.

For the Press: Shell Courtcase

On 9 May 2008, victims of Shell’s oil pollution and Milieudefensie instituted legal proceedings against Shell Nigeria and the Shell parent company in the Netherlands. Three cases, with four victims from the villages of Goi, Ikot Ada Udo and Oruma, were brought before the court. The last court session was on 14 September 2011. This is the first time in history that a Dutch company is being brought before a Dutch court to answer for damage it has caused abroad.
